Premier Morris Iemma recently launched the New South Wales Competitiveness Report 2006, a flagship document detailing the strengths of NSW as a leading choice for business investment.

Produced annually by the NSW Department of State and Regional Development, the Competitiveness Report brings together economic, trade and other data from a range of respected industry sources to compare selected business locations within the Asia Pacific, North America and Europe .

The statistics provided by the Competitiveness Report show that NSW has the largest and most diverse economy in the Australia , and surpassing all but one national economy in South East Asia .

The report shows NSW comprises more than 34 per cent of the nation's GDP and accounts for 44 per cent of the nation's services exports.

It also shows:
  • 45 per cent of the top 500 companies in Australasia are based in NSW
  • 17 of the top 20 global banks have operations here
  • Exports of goods and services in NSW in 2004-05 were valued at $39 billion
  • More than 80 per cent of NSW's industry income is derived from services.

World Cup Fever- Can Boost Office Morale
Source: www.australianbusiness.com.au

With Australia’s campaign for the 2006 soccer World Cup underway, employers are being encouraged to use Australians passion for the Socceroos as a way of building workplace morale.

“This is a world phenomenon that Australia has missed for the past three decades, possibly the only sporting events to rival it are the America’s Cup win in 1983 and the Sydney Olympics”, said Mary Doherty, ABL State Chamber’s resident soccer fanatic and Regional Manager.

“There will be a few nay-sayers who will be moan possible productivity loss, however smart businesses will use the World Cup to generate workplace morale and enthusiasm.

“Office tipping competitions, business sponsored coffee-breaks on mornings after games, green and gold mufti days, are the types of things that businesses can do.

“Whilst I expect there will be many workers (and bosses) yawning through the morning after World Cup days, I don’t think we will see absenteeism.

“I expect many soccer die-hards will talk with their employers to arrange leave – and for those workplaces which operate around the clock, I expect we will see many TVs brought in, no different than the Olympics.

“Our workplaces are becoming more flexible and part of that flexibility, is the ability and capacity for both employers and employees to plan for big events such as the World Cup.

“What is important is that employers and employees detail their expectations in relation to work performance during the World Cup. There is a world of difference between a few yarns and a bad hangover. If you are expecting to have a big night, then my advice is to arrange your leave well ahead of time so you can enjoy the game, without putting your work and reputation at risk.

“We should not forget that serious workplace accidents do occur when people are tired or have hangovers, so we all need to take extra care in relation to occupational health and safety.

Ms Doherty said she did expect some industries in Australia to profit from the World Cup – retailers of plasma and flat screen TVs, sporting apparel and memorabilia, newspapers, coffee sellers, pubs and clubs operating 24 hours, taxis, late night takeaway outlets, the gaming industry and products associated with the Socceroos.

Workers Compensation initiative welcomed by business
Source: www.australianbusiness.com.au

NSW’s largest business organisation ABL State Chamber has welcomed today’s announcement by the NSW Coalition to exempt employers from the cost of Workers Compensation premiums for apprentices.

“This is an excellent initiative. It provides another incentive for businesses to take on an apprentice and as importantly, encourages businesses to make an investment in skills”, said Mark Bethwaite, Chief Executive of ABL State Chamber.

Mr Bethwaite said that business had been saying for some time there needed to be a community re-alignment in thinking about the value of trades and this initiative reflected that realignment.

“This initiative fits with the Federal Government’s work in supporting businesses through the New Apprenticeship Centres. It is incentives such as the one announced today that encourage employers to make an investment in skills.

“ABL State Chamber, through its training arm ABL NAC, is one of largest private providers of New Apprenticeship Support Services in NSW We know this initiative will have a positive impact on business costs and in encouraging businesses to take on apprenticeships.

“When an employer invests in skills by taking on an apprenticeship, ultimately the whole community benefits through increased supply of skilled labour.

Mr Bethwaite said it was pleasing to see both sides of politics begin to take up the skills issue in NSW.

“This announcement, alongside the Budget funding for ten trade schools, reflects the type of initiatives we need to improve the skill base of NSW. We need now to focus on the wider systemic issue of making training in NSW more responsive to business needs.

2006/07 NSW State Budget: payroll tax up 28% over next four years
Source: www.australianbusiness.com.au

The NSW State Budget represents more of the same from the State Government said NSW's largest business organisation ABL State Chamber.

"From a business perspective, the Budget is a letdown - it is more of the same at a time when the NSW economy needs a kickstart." said Mark Bethwaite, Chief Executive of ABL State Chamber.

"The potential opportunity to revitalise the NSW economy is on the backburner whilst we wait for the March 2007 State Election to get out of the way.

"Expenditure continues to grow, the Budget is in deficit and there is no relief for NSW businesses who are paying the highest business taxes in Australia. Meanwhile, NSW still has the slowest rate of economic growth and the highest unemployment in Australia.

"I do not believe the surpluses estimated for coming years are deliverable. It is important to remember that the 2005/06 Budget projected a surplus of $481 million in 2006/07 and the final result was a deficit of $696 million - the Government got this year wrong by $1,177 million.

"ABL State Chamber earlier this year warned that unless the Government made significant expenditure cuts now the NSW Budget position would dramatically worsen. That prediction has proven correct.

"The one certainty from this Budget is that, no matter who wins the 2007 State Election, there will be a Mini Budget next year.

"Ultimately the people of NSW lose - the Government is fearful of making the necessary tough decisions and the NSW Opposition promises solutions but has not provided a costed framework for its policies.

Mr Bethwaite said he had serious concerns over the projected increases for payroll tax in NSW over the next four years.

"Payroll tax continues to be a burden on NSW businesses. NSW has the highest payroll tax rate in Australia at 6.00% and the Budget projects accumulated increases of $3.5 billion going forward.
"The payroll tax burden is increasing - and it makes no sense to increase the burden on business when NSW is the slowest growing state in Australia, with the highest business taxes and the highest unemployment.

IRAN AND ARMENIA TO START ENERGY BARGAIN NEXT YEAR
Article Posted on 08/05/2006
Source: www.armeniadiaspora.net

Iran and Armenia are planning to start an earlier agreed upon energy barter in the next year.

Iran has offered to supply Armenia with natural gas in exchange for electricity imports from the Republic of Armenia , according to a report released in Tehran on Sunday. Construction of the pipeline for carrying Iran 's natural gas to Armenia has already started and is expected to be completed in the next year, the report added.

Based on the deal, Iran's natural gas exports to the Transcaucasian state is scheduled to hit three million cubic meters per day, an official with the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said.

Iran will receive three kilowatts of electricity from Armenia in exchange for each cubic meter of natural gas it exports to the republic.

The agreement over the construction of the natural gas pipeline was signed between the officials of the two countries during the Armenian President Robert Kocharian's visit to Iran in December 2005.

ARMENIAN GOLDSMITH AND DIAMOND SECTOR REPORT SLUMP
Article Posted on 15/05/2006
Source: www.armeniadiaspora.net

Armenian diamond and goldsmith companies have reported a drastic decline in output in the first four months of this year, saying overall they produced 27 percent less goods than a year ago.

Gagik Mkrtchian, head of a trade and industry development ministry's department dealing with this sector, said in terms of money 12 companies which the ministry monitors produced this year 28.4 billion Drams worth of goods, against 38.7 billion drams from a year ago. He said 75 percent of the output was manufactured by diamond cutting companies. Consequently sale and exports in the first fourth months of 2006 were 24 percent lower than a year ago. The slump has also affected wages which fell to 44,000 drams ($100) on average, less than the national average wage.

Mkrtchian attributed the slump to crises in global markets saying the higher prices of oil and gold coupled with the depreciation of the US Dollar's value have significantly cut demands for luxury goods.
He also said that there were domestic reasons for the slump, such as a lack of effective management, lack of financial resources and problems with the supply of raw diamonds from Russia . 80 percent of uncut diamonds are now brought in from Israel and Belgium , causing logistics issues for the Armenian industry.

ARMENIAN IT SUCCESS STORY
Source: AZG Newspaper

A Beirut-native, Haladjian arrived in France as a teenager and studied linguistics. He entered the telecommunications industry in 1983, pioneered the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) in France in 1994, FranceNet, and in 2003, sold it to British Telecom. Many would’ve retired, but Rafi thinks big. He founded two companies, Violet and Ozone, which are exploding the boundaries between technology and daily life. Nabaztag (www.nabaztag.com), the Armenian word for rabbit, was Violet’s next product after WI-FI and their first for mass consumption. Nabaztag is a WI-FI device shaped like a rabbit, and which has the ability to communicate news, weather, email messages and more through sound and light. With a barebones advertising campaign that relied on word of mouth and web postings, it was released in June of this year and Parisians rushed to grab 5,000 Nabaztags in ten days. Violet rolled out another 10,000 units immediately afterwards and those sold out in the following few months. Now, the company is faced with the dilemma of how to meet the steep increase in demand.

What makes Nabaztag unique is that Violet has found a way to make technical objects friendly. Not only can users receive transmitted emotions that tell Nabaztag owners they are loved through pulsing colors or sounds, but they can be programmed to tell traffic, weather and stock reports at a scheduled time.

Why Nabaztag? "First, because I’m Armenian," he replies. "Second, it’s hard to find names nowadays and if you want to differentiate a product you want something that sounds different. When you look at Japanese products they have Japanese names, like Tamagotchi. Nobody knows what it means but you get used to it—so why not Armenian? People in Paris don’t speak more Japanese than Armenian."
